There is no doubt that a person who has not been in the position of being prosecuted or investigated simply cannot understand what it is like to be in that position. It is not something that can be experienced vicariously it can ony be experienced directly by the person themselves. The person who is in the firing line is really completely alone in the sense that someone else cannot step in and feel the emotions for them. All comment in the media comes from people without experience of the feeling that being accused engenders. That is why the comments are invariably harsh and judgmental. It is only those who have been through the mill themselves that have humility and empathy for others in the same position.
