New Zealand has a small population and the legal scene is closely held by a very small clique with close ties to the political scene. A larger population leads to greater legal independence as total social control is much harder to achieve. Total social control is not a good thing. Its a euphemism for authoritarianism. To illustrate the difference consider the position in the UK. There the strength of the independent profession is sufficient to be listened to. Here the profession is so small and government controlled that there is only faint murmurs of opposition to the removal of an independent criminal defence system.
