Be wary

Be wary of the lawyer who says he can get you off the charge without knowing anything about it. Look for a lawyer who is nosy and wants to know what happened. Sometimes the lawyer who says no problem I can get you off this very serious charge will change their minds just before you are about to be arraigned before the jury and say I think you should plead guilty. A trained monkey can tell people to plead guilty. You might be better off with a lawyer who appears a little pessimistic but when the bullets start to fly doesnt wave the white flag.

Book Review Flight of the Fantail.

Book review Flight of the Fantail Steph Matuku Huia Publishers I asked for it in the local bookshop. It was in the children’s section at the rear of the shop. The assistant found it for me. When I paid for it, the teller asked; do you want it gift wrapped? Clearly thinking I was buying it as a gift for my teenage child. When I said no and paid for it, he said enjoy. I didn’t say anything. I could have done a long ramble and said well, it’s written by a novelist in Taranaki who I follow on Twitter. And I am interested in writing so I want to see how you write a novel. But I didn’t. I was just happy to have bought it. So, I took the book home and looked at it carefully, read the back cover, looked at the copyright page, the dedication. The book was over 350 pages. I thought, wow, this is serious stuff. This is pro level. The whole book, it’s weight, it’s feel, it’s look shouted quality. I could tell there was love in the book. I read the first chapter. The writing was clear l

anniversary

When my friend posted all she thought about on Monday was food, I did not know what to say. It was a short story. Would weed do anything for my condition? Would a boiled chicken help hers? Should the government deliver chickens to all? Were there any chickens left? Out west, people were dumping their muddy belongings into skips. Over the bridge, families were viewing their drowned relatives in the morgue. Politicians were nodding on television, casting blame on the radio. I was chewing nicotine, waiting for the chop. And I’m in so deep you know I’m such a fool for you was lingering on the speakers. We had survived the five weeks since Xmas, just. The puppies had doubled in size and were not biting so much. Too late to take them back. I thought the mayor was doing the best he could. His bumbling was refreshing. If it is bad here, what is it like further north in the Pacific? If there are fewer eggs, does that mean there are fewer chickens? Did people really comprehend people had died
